After almost a year of delays caused by lockdowns and restrictions, our 12-week Couch-2-5k programme was able to start in March 2022. The group started with 16 keen runners who all were either first timers, or looking to rekindle their love for running. The first week began very comfortably, with the whole group being encouraged to repeat the run a few times more in their spare time, to aid in their progression.
As the weeks progressed, alternative commitments, COVID cases and other setbacks meant our numbers dropped, but the group was eager to push on and push themselves each week.
On week 6, ASICS kindly provided each runner with a voucher for brand new ASICS running shoes. This extra bit of motivation saw our running group through to the celebratory run up the Gnoll county park. It was perfect conditions for running, with the group showing off their new running shoes and vests. The group completed the 5k comfortably and were rewarded with some NPT Mind branded goodies.
A HUGE Thank you to all our volunteers, it would not have been possible without you. Our run leaders offered encouragement, enthusiasm, and expertise throughout, particularly Lorna and Sam who fought each week over who got the honour of taking the warm-up or warm-down. Peter, who wanted to become a run leader after being a member of our last couch-2-5k group, was incredibly committed to giving our runners the best experience possible and made everybody feel at ease. Ian steered the group to keep us on track each week and was incredibly encouraging to those just starting out. Finally, Em volunteered her time and offered so much motivation and peer support to our runners.

“Starting the couch to 5 k programme is one of the best decisions I have made. I was very anxious prior to attending, but everyone was very supportive and lovely. Will kept everyone very well informed each week, and the funding from ASICS was a great help, as it helped break down any financial barriers. I would recommend this programme to everyone.” ASICS Get Active Participant.
